"Having recognized that there is no potency to the supernatural pill we've been swallowing, will we lose the strength its placebo effect once gave us? Will we find ourselves paralyzed by fear? Will we unleash unforeseen levels of violence because we are no longer afraid of divine retribution? Will the very real consolation we have known disappear when we accept that its source is imaginary?"

Wanda is on page 63 of 356 of Amen: what prayer can mean in a world beyond belief
"Through the ages, those who bravely expressed dissent, pressing and prodding Christianity forward, looked to their fellow humans as they argued their ideas. A greater compassion was their guiding principle, and that lies as a single thread through all their work....If our religions cannot call us there, then I want nothing more to do with them."

Wanda is on page 234 of 400 of With or Without God: Why the Way We Live is More Important than What We Believe – Radical Reform and Compassionate Spirituality for the Modern Church
"In order to explore the concept of God, we need to open ourselves to all kinds of possibilities, such as God being light or there being no God at all. We need to take note of the ways we have been conditioned to experience God and then, when we're having some sort of spiritual experience, be wary of the easy explanations." Page 229.

"The absence of populations from the upper- and upper-middle-class areas of German cities plus their evident presence in such places as Starnberg and Berchtesgaden, strongly support the conclusion offered throughout this work, namely, that the upper and upper middle classes of Germany gave disproportionate support to Hitler's party."

This book is rambling. I am having a difficult time seeing the small stories he tells to the premise of him exploring the faith of his youth as a gay man. Perhaps my expectations are off base. Or perhaps the book really is that rambling and difficult to follow.

All but one, maybe two of the adults in this book are despicable, and I am very much enjoying their trauma.

The main characters of this small town are snobby, small-minded people. I am reading only to see if they get taken down a few pegs. I do not like them at all.
