Holy crap. I think what I’d been missing was Aelin; tbh everyone except Manon and Dorian pales next to her. Didn’t realize how much I missed reading her (though confession: might have just been Mass learning her writing style, but I hated Celaena in the first two books), and how much she grows and learns from herself and the world around her in every scene. Every paragraph with her is purposeful.

Man, it’s been awhile. I should have done a reread of EoS before I tried reading this. Everything feels jumbled. Too many characters I don’t care about or don’t remember. Hate that Yrene and Chaol still exist after ToD. I’m hanging in there because I’ve heard this is such a good ending, but it’s tough.

DNF’d. Chaol went from one of my favorite characters to one of the characters I care about the least.

So far so good. Much more humor than the first book. Seth Dickinson's signature "idk who's the good guy" continues. I miss Tain Hu.

Decidedly more YA than Illuminae. Haven't really touched on any deep issues yet, which is strange because that was all Illuminae was. Rather like Auri so far, though.

Yrene is a complete bitch and very much not ready to go out on her own and become a Healer. That bedside manner...

I love Chaol and Nesryn but so far boooooring and the Khaganate is a copy+paste of Mongolia and idk if I like it yet

I actually surprisingly love this book so far. It's hard to imagine this was the same author that wrote This Savage Song, which I find incredibly boring.

I think the events at the Red Lake have to be one of my absolute favorite pieces of writing. ESPECIALLY because Nick thinks that Lirael in her owl Charter skin and Dog are part of a dream??!

I wish Garth Nix had done more with Astarael

I like the portrayal of Vic in the military, but I HATE THESE TIME JUMPS like what they hell, they're spaced out at such random times

So much telling, not enough showing. 20% in and I feel nothing for any of the characters, which is saying something considering what's happened to our MC. I like the different cultures, but at the same time feel like I don't know much about them. Unimpressed so far.

Can't read a word of economics without falling asleep yet this novel holds my attention? Baru is fascinating to me.

I JUST LOVE THAT BARU IS SO SMART

So it has begun: my annual re-reading of this book, to remind myself of many things. I'm falling in love with it all over again.

Love what I've read so far, but the way its written means that it takes a lot of brainpower to read. I always feel exhausted just reading a couple of pages.

Reading these transcripts give me the same sense of calm I get when I listen to the podcast. An episode (reading or listening) every day before bed makes the entire world seem right.

It's been so long since I read the first book that I don't even remember the plot. Is that bad?
