"Only a fool is not afraid" (Larson 182).
I really like this quote because I found it really amusing. I expected an adult to try to comfort a scared child. Instead, she told Charles to be scared. This quote is trying to show that the journey ahead is really dangerous and she wants to warn them.

"You see, if a very small insect were to move from Mrs. Who's right hand to her left, it would be quite a long walk for him if he had to walk straight across. Now, you see, he would be there without that long trip. That's how we travel" (Larson 139).
This part was very interesting to me because they are trying to explain how traveling at the speed of light works. They use a simple analogy to make Meg understand.

"Make it go away, Mrs. Whatsit. Make it go away. It's evil" (L'engle's 133).
I found Charles's reaction really interesting. Mrs. Whatsit showed the kids the shadow. They were really scared of what the darkness is. They wanted it to go away but expected someone else to defeat the shadow.

"You're just crazy about your father, aren't you? Go ahead and cry. It'll do you good" (L'engle's 95).

I really like this quote because, throughout the beginning of the story, the main character shuts everyone off and suppresses her feelings about her dad going missing. This is the first time we see her slightly showing her feelings because of the connection she felt with the boy,

"Quoile nods remorsely. 'I heard there's another priest here at the joint embassy now. 'They're everywhere. Like maggots.' Lucy waves at them. 'Toss me another fruit. They return to their gorging" (Bacigalupi 134).
I like this quote because it gives an example of the type of conversations they have. While eating the fruits, they discuss the usual conflict of new priests and how they disapprove of the whole system.

"Jaidee sighs. 'I remember a time when the white shirts were loved'" (Bacigalupi 122).
The concept of white shirts and different colors were already introduced in the first multiple chapters. This is possibly a reference to the political aspect of Thailand, which clearly shows that Bacigalupi knows the intricate details of Thai society. The division between the different colored shirts has significance to the story.

"...in the sweat of the sun, he finds a newsvendor. He fumbles through the newspapers and hand-cracked whisper sheets of rumor...advertising good numbers for gambling and the names of predicted muay thai champions" (Bacigalupi 111).
This clearly shows many aspects of this world. It describes the weather of the country and things considered important in society. It also indicates that the news is unreliable.

"Materials were pulled on crates and laid out in careful rows. The Customs men hover, taking the names of his white shirt until his men finally raised machetes and give a chase" (Bacigalupi 76).

This part shows the process of moving goods. It is very descriptive and it also demonstrates the types of interaction the two groups have. The passage also highlights the tension between them.

"Is there a flicker of fascination there? Does she intrigue him? Or is it simply her story that interests him?"

This was when it was made clear that this character introduced has significance to the story. The pale man with blue eyes mesmerized and could control Emiko just like a Grahamite could. These small questions made the interaction between them more interesting.

"Only Thais would spend so much time making a bribe look like a service agreement. They're polite, even when they are shaking you down" (Bacigalupi 21). This passage clearly shows the society in Thailand. Although the intentions may not be genuine, Thais will value manners first. It also mentions the plot that the Thais are manufacturing new fruits like the gnaw and bribing the ministry.
