As I begin reading this book, I am struck with hopelessness, for I see how little progress has been made on so much of what DuBois writes. I see the Veil, but really only from one side. I grasp the idea of a double-consciousness, but only intellectually. Not viscerally, intimately, personally. I will never be able to understand the pain of Black people, or their struggles.
