Much talk of hell and suffering is challenging for my western mind, and is kind of blowing my view of Buddhism as a religion that focuses on basic goodness rather than fear of punishment. Persevering because the positive wisdom is enriching.

An action-packed Takeshi Kovac tale. Good scifi, and a perfectly flawed hero. I'm going to miss this series.

I like this book better than Altered Carbon, the first in the Kovac series, and it could stand alone. But it wouldn't be as rich without having read the first to establish the character history, nature, and technologies of the fictional universe. I read 3 chapters at a time when I intend to read one or two. That's a good sign.

Plodding pace, and overly polite at times--so much is made of how virtuous these vampire fighters are--but a great story at its heart.

Slow going, dense and amazingly descriptive. Unfortunately most of the French cultural references are lost on me, but quite amazing nonetheless. Just a lot of work to parse.

I find it hard to believe that a poet would be independently wealthy. So how is it the narrator appears to have all the time in the world to putter? I can't relate, so my engagement in his various low-level drama is limited. It's interesting enough to finish thanks to NB's talent, but just barely.
