Ive been absolutely riveted by this all day and can’t help, like in Elton John’s testimonial for it, picking it up and having another go at a chapter or more. The Wainwright longlist is full of gems this year but this reads like a close winner.

Lovely memoir and Benzene the best name for a magpie!

Exact paperback version not found on Goodreads but already at this early stage I know this Wainwright longlistee is a good’un, or should I say good egg.

A little book, but an important one. I’ve read the foreword and title essay in double quick time: not really preachy but certainly reminding one to be urgent; just the interview now and then I’ll be done, a Wainwright book in an hour or so. Bang. Though, hopefully, not the Big Bang.

A small book but important. On the Wainwright Prize longlist for Conservation writing - the second year for this list, running alongside the more known Nature writing one - I am keen to up my reading total AND think about what we can do to save the planet.
