‘When the village came into sight, she paused briefly on the rise, looking out over the chimney smoke rising into the grey sky, smelling the wet pine from the forests. It was like returning from a dream.’

‘Who are you?’ she asked.
He leaned closer with a mocking smile. ‘You tell me,’ the world said.

‘I never needed threats to convince me to keep you alive. Yet you still made them.’

‘And if you don’t come when I call?’
‘Then you’re mortal like the rest of us.’
