Woah, that was a bit of a stronger end to the chapter than expected.

A scene almost funny in its creepiness.

Hah! Control's Saturday morning call was brilliant and ingenious!

"You don't think about it every day or it would ride up an consume you. It just remains there, nameless; a sad, dark think that weighs you down only some of the time. When the memory becomes too faint, too abstract, it transforms itself into a pain so thin yet so sharp."

Oh, the "famous twenty-second clip". How wonderfully unsettling.

"Mouse-powered irrigation system for data relay and biosphere maintenance", heh.

"Never do something for just one reason."

"When the slugs begin to talk there's no time to lose."

HOLY SHIT. That gave me actual shivers. Hoooooly shit.

There's a surprising undercurrent of suspense, considering the reader already knows the outcome; there been just the perfect amount left as mystery. I'm impressed.

"All it takes is the elimination of one generation. One generation of anything. Break the link in tune between one generation and the next, and it's game over forever."

"He was familiar with the tectonics of cantilevered mammary-gland support devices by now-"

"There was always an element of melancholy involved in sex. After his indiscriminate adolescence he'd preferred sad women, delicate and breakable, women who's been messed up and who needed him. He'd like to comfort them, stroke them gently at first, reassure them. Make them happier, if only for a moment."

"But the body had its own cultural forms. It had its own art. Executions were its tragedies, pornography was its romance." The whole section which those few lines close is notable, but too long to reproduce.

There's something intangibly enthralling here. Sure, the story is novel, the characters unique and layered, and the writing style fresh... but I think there must be something else that's got be so thoroughly hooked, and I can't pin it down.

"We begun well, sir. I distrust a man that says 'when'. If he's got to be careful not to drink too much it's because he's not to be trusted when he does."

A scant 25 pages in and already the plot is thick as molasses. My goodness.

Hah! Creepy.

A very fitting close.

And WHAT an end!

"I buy myself breakfast, leave a ten-thousand-dollar tip, then walk back to my flat to wait for the end of the world."

The penny drops for the protagonist a little late

Chilling.

A chilling padlock experience.

"How do I love thee? Let me count the eigenstates..."

"This is how subjective time arises, how the future turns into the past, for us. We're in no position to discern how, or when, it happens." A gnawing thought for the next time I find myself alone and unobserved.

"Pure Orwellian doublethink.

"Knowing that my feelings have been physically imposed makes them no less powerful. Part I me finds this paradoxical, part of me finds it obvious. I can contemplate this contradiction until it drives me mad - of begins to seen utterly mundane - but there's nothing I can do to change it."

The police priming mods are an interesting necessary 'evil'. Their benefit was displayed to great effect during the chapter, and their unsettling reality was displayed just as well by the end of it.

"Deceptions of any magnitude are possible, on a short enough time scale; laws only apply to data that sits still long enough to be caught out."
