Story in which people are menaced by possessed shoelaces. I am giggling SO much at this idea.

We'll just ignore how I'm adding yet another book to current reading instead of finishing off others that are still waiting to be finished...

Stories I am tired of/don't care if I read again 1) couples being horrible to each other before and after death, 2) child and/or spouse dying in traumatic manner (with lots of fixation on suffering) and parents' pain, no hope of any release or help, 3) psychological horror with modern setting which has more to do with horror than ghosts or madness, depressing vs creepy feel that de Maupassant does so well.

Uh oh, at this point lots of ghost stories are reminding me of others. Must make self take a non ghost story book break after this I think. (Except I just got one in the mail...)

Very hard to learn to clean my book plate before dipping in and starting others out of book greed. GR is actually helping me with this. A bit. It's like trying to not eat the frosting off the cupcake.

Reading this while listening to Halloween music mix is perhaps not such a great idea. Keep drifting in and out of story to focus on music. Hmm. Might try less interesting background music, but I think that would be mostly the howling/sound effects stuff.

Wanted to reread another ghost story collection for Halloween.

So far I've downloaded around ten books off Gutenberg/Internet Archive/Google that I've found via quotes. (I consider this a good thing!)

Really enjoying this, but so many of the quotations are so interesting I must stop and check out author info online. Think I must also reread just to look up online photos of some of the locations.

Weird, GR didn't let me update my recent finished book's shelves until I allowed all scripts on the page. Unless the whole system had issues suddenly, not just that one book (which would be odd).

Got more of my used books via gift card in mail today. Very tempted to build a small wall/fort around my desk of my To Read pile.

Now remembering why I don't often finish books of ghost stories. For every chunk of stories that are interesting and just the sort of thing you wanted to read, there's a segment of stories (or even just one) that are SO INCREDIBLY depressing, sad and angsty that it sticks with you. I don't seem to have any books without at least one of those sorts tucked inside.

All finished. And randomly, penguins were mentioned. When the hero has his new prosthetic leg fitted and then feels the need to caper about, penguinlike.

My favorite out of context quote from this will forever be "I had not to guard myself, but could let my eye devour her small oval face." To which I say: Fear The Eye That Devours! And I also note that it's 14 days til Halloween.
