“The archaeology of grief is not ordered. It is more like earth under a spade, turning up things you had forgotten. Surprising things come to light: not simply memories, but states of mind, emotions, older ways of seeing the world.”

More beauty.

"The kiss of his memory made pictures of love and light against the wall. Here was peace. She pulled in her horizon like a great fish-net. Pulled it from around the waist of the world and draped it over her shoulder. So much of life in its meshes! She called in her soul to come and see"

"Then you must tell 'em dat love ain't somethin' lak uh grindstone dat's de same thing everywhere and do de same thing tuh everything it touch. Love is lak de sea. It's uh movin' thing, but still and all, it takes its shape from de shore it meets, and it's different with every shore".

This book is an absolute joy. I have fallen asleep reading it twice and now I'm crying on the train reading it. Can't put it down and don't want it to end. Haven't felt this way about a book in a very long time.

Absolutely adore this so far. Hilarious and poignant (much like Ove- could I possibly like this one more?!!). Also enjoying the Harry Potter references. Love how the fantasy and reality are intertwined.

Shells is starting The Left Hand of Darkness
From the introduction, "In reading a novel, any novel, we have to know perfectly well that the whole thing is nonsense, and then, while reading, believe every word of it. Finally, when we're done with it, we may find- if it's a good novel- that we're a bit different from what we were before we read it, that we have been changed a little, as if by having met a new face, crossed a street we never crossed before."

In the foreword by Cornel West, "Martin Luther King Jr. called for us to be lovestruck with each other, not colorblind toward each other. To be lovestruck is to care, to have deep compassion, and to be concerned for each and every individual, including the poor and vulnerable."

Oh and "The Grammarian's Daughter" and "The Forbidden Words of Margaret A.". Trying to keep better track as sometimes I have trouble recalling my reaction to specific stories within a collection.

Really enjoying this collection. Some familiar writers and lots that are new to me. I just laughed aloud reading "Tales from the Breast" by Hiromi Goto. Absolutely loved "The Men Who Live in Trees" by Kelly Barnhill and "The Evening and the Morning and the Night" by Octavia Butler.
