Enjoying it so far but why is this more than 400 pages I don’t think any book needs to be that long

Okay I like it, I love Malay and I can understand all the Malay sentences/words/food concepts which is fun and I love the premise but for being a big scary ghost it sure is a softie, and like right off the bat which just seems really unrealistic. I was hoping this would be way darker but I realize this is for middle schoolers 😂

The use of food in this is fascinating!!! Makes me think about the catholic term substantiation which is theoretically a way to ascend a chain of being through a conversion of substance. That’s such a stretch but it kind of makes sense when thinking about what we consume and how that shapes us to our truest form — how does trauma fit in? Why are we obsessed with consumption to feel close. To feel transformed??

Dude things are getting wild. My only main issue with this tho is that I feel like the protagonist is reminiscent of something a fanfic writer would write. A little over described and too self aware. The author really spells out her ever trauma and coping mechanism to you the same way a Juvenal fanfic author would. I wish there was a little bit left for me to figure out about her instead of her just being so explicit
