I am reminded once again, reading this, of how far journalistic standards have fallen during my lifetime. Robert Fisk was the very archetype of the scholarly foreign correspondent, but scholarliness was typical among the reporters (even many of the photographers!) whose work I avidly read as a child in the pages of The New York Times, Chicago Tribune etc. That is, sadly, no longer the case nowadays...
