The Americans moved against the Apaches, the Apaches moved against the Mexicans, the Mexicans moved against the Yaquis...lone dry stalks of corn shimmied and worried in the breeze, their kernels pilfered by crows, their flaxen tassels detaching and sailing away to fall among packs rats and field mice, joining the stray cotton threads of the dead to make underground nests for writhing pale masses off blind infants.

We would begin a second friendship in England, but we were different by then, no longer free of the realities of the earth.

And now I understood why it was important to read these books. Because being witness to all types of human experience is important to understanding the world, but also to understanding myself. To define what is important to me, and who is important, and why.

But now I also had a mandate to go backward and recover memories. And an even greater mandate: to share what I found in books, intertwined with my memories.

She had always believed that her parents had done right by her, but now sitting mute at Stanton's table, she found herself seething for their choices. Why had they kept her life so small? Why had they never asked her what she wanted? At every possible turn she saw they had chosen a path that would keep her weak and dependent...

One thing this job has taught me is that when people are caught in the maddening swirl of time, they do what they need to do and invent their reasoning afterward. They exculpate themselves, claim they had no choice. They throw their hands up to the heavens or shrug that Events simply were what they were. They used to call it fate, or God, or Allah, though of course such talk is illegal now.

#fridayreads ?..that something which used to make me fear and shrink, as if I had been wandering amongst volcanic-looking hills, and had suddenly felt the ground quiver and seen it gape: that something, I, at intervals, beheld still; and with throbbing heart, but not with palsied nerves. Instead of wishing to shun, I longed only to dare -- to divine it...

How little imagination and courage we show in our hatreds. If we earn fifty cents an hour, we admire the rich and pity the poor, and we reserve the full force of our venom for those who make a penny more or a penny less. That's why there isn't a revolution every ten years.
