I've always thought of myself as a pretty well-informed feminist...bell hooks is helping me to understand just how much of feminism's history I just don't know or understand. So far am loving this book.

This book is already so comforting to me - a confirmation that I'm not abnormal for disliking open plan offices and that I remain just as creative as I was when I was growing up...it's just that I'm now trying to be creative in groups, an idea I'm fundamentally uncomfortable with. Hoping that this book gets more into how I can better function in an extroverted business world, though.

Serious question: Food Lion doesn't operate stores in NJ, do they? This one small detail in the final story is just heightening my general dissatisfaction with the collection.

I hate to be a whiner...but, seriously, let's whine: 3 out of the 9 stories in this collection were published in Link's earlier collections. Not that Link's stories aren't worth rereading, but I'd hoped for more new stories rather than an invitation to read "The Faery Handbag" for the tenth time.

perfect description of travel in albania: "The seller of tickets distributed bright red plastic shopping bags gratis to the vomiting classes, in this case small children and the elderly, who, as if on cue, started puking immediately."

the chapter about a woman who marries a snake? kind of incredible

so far, impressed that oliver keeps things interesting even as we're visiting the same day again and again; also that the moral message at book's center (a pretty obvious one) doesn't come across too heavy handedly

this is a pretty good read, but it is reminding me that i spent most of college drifting off while reading similar books. need more coffee.
