Necessary reading, or, Don't expect the state to save us.

I don't like how she gets to where she does, but my gosh does Butler ask the right questions. Also, Happy New Year everyone!

I will never not love reading Virno. It's less 'what' he thinks than 'how': there's a meticulousness to his writing, each paragraph building on the last, each adding up to a density that always catches you by surprise. And the creativity on display is always awesome to behold: here a mash-up of Bergson and Aristotle, a meditation on time and history via the notion of deja vu. Very cool stuff.

This is frikkin wild, in the best possible of ways.

Man, the first chapter here already walks all over Dean's previous 'The Communist Horizon'. Academics sometimes just don't do popularisation well. This though, is gripping, white-knuckled writing that's everything I was hoping for.

It's been reported that in his seminar on The Logic of Fantasy, Lacan was driven to exaltation over Deleuze's essay: "He writes on Masochsim undoubtedly the best text ever written!". It's almost unimaginable now, but pre-Anti-Oedipus, Deleuze was an internal critic of psychoanalysis of monstrous ability and creativity. One reads this wondering agape at what could have been, had the critique not turned external.
