My wonderful wife got this for us to read, I loved the animated series and this one is just as good. Lighthearted humour.

The Iron Gates. This was a terrific suspense/murder mystery. In the end you knew justice was served, in it's own way.
I could see this as a period series with a recurring character, Inspector Sands. It takes place in Toronto around 1940-45. It was great. I highly recommend it.

The Iron Gates. The last story in the book, but a long one. So far turning out to be a good suspenseful mystery.

"The man who liked Dickens" Hmm, that was a creepy story, no supernatural forces, just a psychotic old man that likes to take hostages.
If I ever get lost in the Brazilian jungle and happen across an old man that tells me how he can make all kinds of medicines....I'll just turn around and walk back into the jungle.

'The Mugging'. Another one that isn't so great, but for different reasons. I like period pieces but I seriously dislike ones where the narrator speaks in street slang instead of leaving it in the actual dialogue.

'Back there in the grass'.
Okay, well it was an interesting story but I didn't like it very much, the friend of the main protagonist was an idiot, he did things that would make any anthropologist suddenly rage. He was only saved due to the actions of the main protagonist, regrettable as those actions were.
Bored upper-class twits are exactly that. Twits.

Reading with the Misses. She does a good Holly. I think I'm a rather dashing Skull in a jar.

The original 'The Fly'was better than either of the movies, b&w or Jeff Goldbloom version. I had no idea it was originally a french story. Tragic and almost non-chalant in that very french sort of way. Lots of alcohol too.

Still so much better than the movie. Would be a better tv mini series than a movie due to all the information present in the book. And Hammond is a real asshat.

The Second Night Out, this had a very Lovercraft-esque style to it. A horror that is never explained, it just is, which makes it all the more interesting. To be honest, I don't like having supernatural horrors explained, it removes the thrill and visceral feeling you get from reading about it.

I'm not so sure about the story Side Bet, suspenseful yes, but not something that I would say keeps you up at night. Still good though.

Some of these stories are great ghost stories. The Whistling Room reads like something that wouldn't be out of place in Lockwood and Co.

So far, only one not-so-good story, but that might just be because I wasn't understanding the authors intent.
