lynda gotta have more respect for her female characters

I like all the moving parts but the way they come together is leaving little to be desired. The female characters are badly characterised, secondary to the story and have little personality outside of their AFAB status. Its all motherhood, crushes, weddings or male-inflicted violence. When women are more often the victims of these crimes, books should make more effort to centre them in the stories.

The plot and twists are taking precedent now. Less wishy washy character writing.

Detective Warr is a good main character, nothing special. Intrigued by Ridleys character. No female characters with much intrigue. Enough mystery to keep me interested but nothing too character heavy. Is Hannah Warr's daughter? and if so, did he describe looking after his child as babysitting?

really weird tonal shifts in the ways characters are described and act. Women are all eccentric or cringe versions of stereotypes. Strange focus on looks and crushes.

Why are people surprised at 1 stars as if black characters arent diminished to slurs and 'the black girl'. Just because its of its time doesnt mean its any less disgusting x

Reframing how we view violence. It's always hard to explain why looks feel so invasive and aggressive, as an AFAB individual and a non-binary person. A whole new world is opening up to me.

This is putting into words feelings and thoughts I couldn't quite express or fully understand yet. This is healing parts of my non-binary identity that, as a newly out individual, I wasn't even aware had been damaged.

I'm stuck between loving the eccentricity that translates itself into some of the writing, while hating other aspects. The personal anecdotes are vulnerable, hilarious, and scandalous (often a mix of all three). Also loving supporting my enby family 💗

Chapter 16 - Sam is the biggest, more wholesome hero. Frodo is so wise compared to the film version of him; he's less meak and more grounded.

Im all about slow, character-building and journey-based stories so this is perfect for me. Despite that, I'm listening to a theatrical audiobook so that is definitely adding to the effect and skewing my view.

Chapter 15

Lots of good tips and a concise, easy to digest scientific account of food consumption, production and waste. Not enough connection to capitalism, (food) poverty or reference to further scholarship on such debates. These are important to consider when talking about food in the modern world, without this consideration the chapter feels out of touch.

Writing the spoken word is really soothing to me. And, it doesn't require extra brain effort to comprehend sentence structures and big words.

Part of the history of anarchy and revolution in Spain. Most of chapter is engaging, but it becomes repetitive as it nears the end.

Jon at the Wall. Maester Eamon's history (King for a brother). Mormont is bit of a bidge.

Less wordy and academic than the first chapter. Concise and personalised to Chomsky's style of Anarchism with great introduction to the concept as a whole - briefer and more digestible than such intent as seen in Chapter 1, 'Notes on Anarchism'.

First woman introduced through her beauty - wisdom is mentioned so not purely shallow. Frodo sees himself as lucky to sit amongst her and the other high-standing folk.

Really prolonging getting into the lore, this is literally ½ way into the book and we're not there yet.
