This book feels...silly. And not in a fun way, but in a time-wasted way. I can't deny that Jean Ray is an excellent writer, with an amazing grasp for language -- and the translator did a marvelous job rendering that into English. But at the same time, much of this book feels pointless. I read three chapters on a plane ride and realized most of the time was unnecessarily spent on descriptions of items.

"Growing moon. Angry cat. Feather on the wind. Autumn comes. The grass dies." (October 25)

"Overhead, growing in strength, the older, wiser moon paced me. I'd give her a run for her silver." (October 26)

Geez. A story of generational abuse hidden beneath the guise of a Lovecraftian coming-of-age tale.

Man, the Second Kira arc just grinds this whole thing to a screeching halt. Is it boring? No. Is it a great addition to the story? Yes. But all forward momentum disappears into a seemingly-interminable sea of discussions and word balloons...
