Bit of a mixed bag so far: really thorough and interesting stuff, but it casually mentions that Thatcher-era privatisations were "successful"; as was the govts' preparations for H1N1 (look up Ben Goldacre's piece on 'Tamiflu').

I guess what makes a "successful" government action by the authors' definition means "was achieved without apparent error". Perhaps a little shortsighted?

Good stuff regardless.

Turns out Butlins founder Billy Butlin made his fortune in the interwar years by owning the European license to dodgems (bumper cars). That's a fun fact that will impress probably nobody, but you're welcome.

Great book so far.
