Finding it surprising how less interesting seem the soldiers' banter on a reread than the first time.

Nabokov gives me the same impression, writing-wise, of McCarthy: masterfully written boredom. They are like Tool in music: you cannot fault their technique but neither you can love what they produce.

Did not like this one much the first time, let's how years have changed my perspective on it

I am firmly on my way to become a hoary old bastard but Erikson can still make me cry like no other author.

The book has taken pace and every chapter has a revelation now. I do remember Reaper's Gale being among my favourites and now I also remember why.

I do not think it is a good sign when the meat of a novel feels...banal.

Reading faster now. One thing that it is definitely not true about Moby Dick is that is a novel about the sea. Even the greatest one.
I dissent. The sea is a marginal element, it is rarely mentioned, ignored for vast chapters, reduced to the element over the which the Pequod sails.

Cetology chapters are the best ones. The plot would be interesting if Melville spent more than 2% of the book on it. So far it is like most 800s classics, prose over plot and characters.

Going really slow with this one. I really dislike the chapters' patterns of "plot A-plot B-plot C-plot D" and so on vs Erikson's "plot A-plot B" and then new chapter with "plot C-plot D".

Finally leaving behind Christian "philosophy". They are not called the Dark Ages for nothing, after all.

Interesting how much more intriguing is the Crimson Guard on a re-read vs the first time.

Perhaps reading this and Malazan at the same time is not the best pairing, but at least it is not as complex as Bakker...

I remember having little sympathy for the Letherii. Now I find myself hating the Edur. How years of maturing change how we see characters.
