The introductory nature of this book makes it an excellent textbook for engineering undergraduates. Radhika's language is very simple.

Levictetus was very boring and Numbers got interesting only towards the end. On to Deuteronomy to finish the fifth book on Moses.

Exodus is exciting in the first half, but gets really specific on rituals towards the end. Levictetus is amostly list of rules, most of it obvious but LORD knows better to spell it out for his precious bunch. Its amazing how much of it is punishable by death. And, oh Lord please tone down on the sacrificing! There is so much sprinking of blood. Levictetus is a Book of Horrors for lambs and pigeons.

Family. Something so intuitive and natural we never think of looking up a definition for it. Nivedita makes you look that up and you begin to wonder if it really is 'natural' and 'intuitive' as you thought.

Everyone succumbs to finitude. I suspect I am not the only one who reaches this pluperfect state. Most ambitions are either achieved or abandoned; either way, they belong to the past. The future, instead of the ladder toward the goals of life, flattens out into a perpetual present. Money, status, all the vanities the preacher of Ecclesiastes described hold so little interest: a chasing after wind, indeed.

Humans are organisms, subject to physical laws, including, alas, the one that says entropy always increases. Diseases are molecules misbehaving; the basic requirement of life is metabolism, and death its cessation.

The chaplain had mastered, in a moment of divine intuition, the handy technique of protective rationalization, and he was exhilarated by his discovery. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice.

I am yet to get to the bloodier parts but for certain this book brings to shame the foreign policy adopted by post independent India, spine-less appeasement and indifferent to facts.
It's as relevant today than it was in '62. Enemy is still as predictable as we want them to be. War, war never changes.
