i feel bad because i am not the intended audience for this middle grade novel but when did rick riordan (or maybe it’s the influence of the co-author?) become so heavy-handed in his messaging? maybe trials of apollo but it felt a little less weird because apollo was such a campy narrator. it’s great that middle schoolers are learning ab queerness and trauma but damn the cost is any subtly whatsoever😭

i think what’s bothering me a lot about this is that we keep getting told how sad nico is and how tortured he is but, aside from our knowledge of events in previous books, we aren’t really. shown. this. something is just feeling forced.
