Butler's writing doesn't excite me, but it fulfills her purpose with exacting intensity.
So far, the writing in Fledgling is extremely dull, dry and devoid of any imagination or skill. If she had not been Butler but a new writer, her editor would have thrown it the trash 50 pages in. If she had not been Butler, I would stop reading here. Please, let this get better!

Ms. Valente is ruled by the fear of not having at least 2 metaphors or similes per 2-3 sentences, no matter how nonsensical or overwrought they are. Perhaps it is the cosmic rule of writing lay down by the Mare that gave her the power of story telling, [insert simile here, probably involving the moon, the color silver, or some liquid flowing. Perhaps all three]
