My 8 year old son loved the Greta Gerwig movie, and then loved the 1980s anime version even more, so we are now reading this at bedtime, and he loves it although he keeps telling me all the ways in which it diverges from the plot of the anime. (Which is quite, quite different; there are house fires and runaway slaves and a cat and a guy named Anthony.)

Retellings for kids. We just finished the Count of Monte Cristo, and both girls loved it. About to move on to the Prisoner of Zenda, which I've never read. Great fun!

I am trying, really trying. I like the prison setting but this is such a slog, especially all the spiritualism.

To my surprise, both of my kids are loving this book. The three year old thinks Count Olaf is scary but they both want me to read a chapter every night.

This is taking me a long time to get through because I keep walking away from it. You know horrible things are going to happen and you just wish they would not.

This book is so good, I am almost grateful for the stomach flu that is giving me time to read it.

I have been reading this book for months and I think I need to stop -- the book is very well written, but it is scaring the crap out of me and making me not want to send my kid to public school.
