Hold up so so so well on a second reading. Still. The post-modern Russia of Peter Pomerantsev is, of course, already here in full-fledged form in the world of illusions, nihilism, plots-within-plots, conspiracies-within-conspiracies, etc. that Dostoevsky create.

Re-reading this one again. (I read it pretty quickly the first time.) It's more half-baked on the 2nd read through, especially within the light shed by the first two chapters of Gadamer's Truth and Method.

I just love this novel. It gets even better the second time through. Surely the most "Dostoevskian" of Dostoevsky novels -- you are always in the middle of things, a never-ending series of middles (faltering starts, stops, nesting comments/events, and gossipy chaos).

Absolutely brilliant in many places. Such nuggets of good writing! (The "Jackal" and "Lion" scene!) But dripping with bathos at times, and smacks a bit of historical revisionism. Look, I'm probably pretty Burkian on views about the French Revolution, but Dickens is downright dogmatic about the French Revolution.
