I enjoyed the Axis tie in, and the one or two other stories were fine. The ending was pretty fun, but ultimately the takes on the characters are unique, breezy, and not loaded down with mythology. I loves me some mythology, but I also like snappy, witty banter without a lot of asterisks and references to back issues.
