Well, did veer off a different way than I expected, but not far from the beaten path. About half way through and whilst i'm not finding it as actively unpleasant to read, i'm not overly enjoying it either.

About a third of the way through, so far it hasn't been particularly interesting and quite unpleasant in parts. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - the time period in question was quite unpleasant, particularly with regards to race relations, and respect to Buehlman for not hesitating to look directly at it, even with the main character.

I think I can see how all this unfolds though, and I'm not enthused.

Quite sad and confronting, mental illness portrayed with insight and understanding. It's not exactly a fun book but wondering exactly what happened at planetfall is keeping me reading.

Disappointed in this one so far. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, the writing is good and the characterisation is realistic.

That may even be part of the issue, I can totally buy these characters as teenage girls, it's harder to buy them as the furies.

Not sure about this one so far. That said, i'm probably not the target audience, but the obvious greek-inspired mysticism has me interested to see where it'll go.

Finished the Damiata section of the story now and I have to admit, it drew me in a fair bit. On to Niccolo's sections now and I just hope that in the end, we are going to find out what became of Giovanni. I can only assume that he is the Infans Romanus, as Giovanni the elder wasn't recorded or even rumoured to have sired a bastard from what I can tell - the Infans was rumoured to be Cesare's or Rodrigo's.

So far, unsure why this book had such low ratings. Whilst it's not really drawing me in very much, nothing about it has been bad so far... certainly the weaving of the history of the setting into the fiction is being accomplished far better than many authors I've read.

This is just awful. Candidate for worst i've read this year. I'd have stopped already if I hadn't had so much trouble finding a book for the Gilded Age category in the historical mystery setting challenge.

Finished the first chapter and we're not off to a good start. The dialogue is boring and stilted, the metaphors aren't so much mixed as ripped to shreds and it's all so transparent and so so tedious. Hoping this finds its groove or it's going to be a looooong walk to the end.

"A little sci fi" has turned into "Mievielle levels of new weird, City and the City style". It's awesome.

This has been an interesting book. Slow starting, but fans of spy novels will find a lot to like once it kicks off. Small touches of Sci-Fi and a near-future balkanised europe add to a quite detailed setting.

"Isobel had heard the greatest faith bazaar was in Tong Yun City on Mars. The one they had on Level Three here was a low-key affair—a Church of Robot mission house, a Gorean temple, an Elronite Centre for the Advancement of Humankind, a Baha’i temple, a mosque, a synagogue, a Catholic church, an Armenian church, an Ogko shrine, and a Theravada Buddhist temple."

A Gorean _Temple_? Wouldn't that be something to see

Feels a little gibsonish. Slight name-check too I suspect, with reference to the bio clinics of Chiba. Hasn't grabbed me yet though.

“What do your crazy speciests do?” Kizzy asked. Sissix shrugged. “Live on gated farms and have private orgies.” “How is that any different than what the rest of you do?” “We don’t have gates and anybody can come to our orgies. Except the Laru. They’re allergic to us.”

I think I may be a little bit in love with Becky Chambers at this point.

This book is exactly the antidote I needed right now. It's wonderful. I want to move into the wayfarer and just hang out.

Ok, the devil got involved huh. I'm not sure whether I'm liking the twists in this or if it all got a bit cheesy towards the end.

Still, book was fun. Will definitely read the next.

Light hearted and fun, with a touch of mystery to keep me going. It's like if Stephanie Plum could see ghosts, that's how this book feels. I'm really enjoying it.

It took a while but the book sucked me in, and then ended with everything up in the air and nothing - not a single one of the plot threads - actually resolved. I find that ridiculously irritating.

There are several different subplots relating to different characters, but also either four, three or two primary plots, depending on how you rank importance (and how they are going to be tied off).

Kaz just breaks my heart though.

It's a neat trick to make you emotionally connect with a character, and then a few paragraphs later have him calmly pop out someone's eyeball in graphic detail.

I like it.

Shades of Scott Lynch. Fairly gritty, interesting world building, borderline psychotic main characters and a heist.

Seems legit.
