I joked about this being a "real horror story" to follow up my Stephen King binge, and I feel like an ass now. Reading the gruesome details of Artie's suicide attempt and a later conversation with his mother where in her hysteria she suggests they just die together is, well, not even remotely fun.

Soooo close.

Don't know why I was so unable to get into this book the first time around, it's actually pretty scary.

"When Anna's water broke in her living room on Oliver Avenue, I had just handed her a crack pipe. We stared at each other, each of us running the numbers in our head. She had just entered her third trimester. It was hard to tell whether we were in the midst of giving birth or participating in a neonatal homicide. The water beneath her became a puddle of implication. Now look what we did."

211 pages in about two and a half hours. That may be my new record. Speed reading may not get girls, but it does wonders for the self esteem all the same.

I actually am enjoying this for the most part, but I find it ironic that I just finished praising Joyland for brevity, and I'm over halfway through this one and we're JUST getting started in earnest on the JFK/Oswald plot now.

I'm going to assume that the Arnette football team that the Jodie Lions take on at the end of Part III is the same Arnette that the Dillon Panthers would face a few decades later.
