It's a struggle. I'm coming across one of those moments where the author doesn't know how to write for a woman, let alone a 13 year old girl. She uses strangely sexualized language and I'm often pulled out of the story due to these uncharacteristic 13 year old words and actions. Maybe Chuck Palahniuk should stick to writing about angry young men.
