“The first twigs are thin, green, and supple. They bend into a complete circle, but will not break. Their delicate, showy hopefulness shooting from forsythia and lilac bushes meant only a change in whipping style. They beat us differently in the spring. Instead of the dull pain of a winter strap, there were these new green switches that lost their sting long after the whipping was over.”

The Bluest Eye

Octavio Solis
Octavio Solis is on page 37 of 87 of Splitting an Order
Simple unadorned poetry of the common life. Easy to be fooled by its generous warmth. But don’t dismiss these poems. Mr. Kooser’s prodigious power to observe and transform snapshots of people and things into holy moments is as heartbreaking as it is deeply humanizing. “Estate Sale” is a special wonder. In this work, he manages to lend dignity and pity for the most useless junk. Indeed, he lends them life.

I’m drawing out the reading of this book ‘cause I’m digging it so much. It speaks to me. Maybe nobody else. But it’s enough that it’s directing its message to me. One more sitting and I’ll be done.
