What a snarky English novel! So wry and contemptuous of its characters. And therefore such fun to read. Spark understands that human nature doesn’t become “cute” as the human ages into senescence. She’s merciless in her depictions of these selfish, suspicious characters who really only want their share of dignity and self-satisfaction in their final days. Mortality is truly a bitch.
