I am nearly 100 pages in and am very close to abandoning it for the principal reason that it's politically retrograde in its treatment of gender. Maybe the cliché presentation of women and men will reveal itself to have been a knowing device intended to set us up for a shocking twist, but at present I think it's revelling in its fawning descriptions of women's bodies and maquillage. I gave up. Its tone seems so dated. I enjoyed the rich pickings: lots of fascinating information about the early days of mid-to-late twentieth century horror culture, but I was not drawn into King's depiction of that world, and I decided to send it back to the library early. I will probably pick it up again to extract certain pulp facts, but I would prefer an academic account.
