So I was right; a gun backfired. It was nice hearing about the mothers and their excitement over the prison custard but it was also uncomfortable reading about their humiliation and being stripped of their identities. Teddy was supposed to good and was supposed to be their backbone, but he failed them. And even though there was no justice for the missing children, the Mothers have become patron saints.

I’m worried about Teddy and the gun. His voice and narration whilst drunk, wandering the streets added a more truthful and direct tone from his character but involving a gun (unidentified too) is very dangerous and could backfire. I hope the Mothers’ efforts don’t go to waste.

Teddy’s reunion with some of the other people he grew up with and how they criticise the Mothers. It’s been nice seeing the story from Teddy’s perspective after the introduction of the situation from the Mothers. He does so much for them and his community whilst wearing himself out.

The police dehumanising, accusing, mocking. Continuous descriptions and high tension. Teddy fighting back, angry, the first time he’s not been meek or sheepish in his life. How he searches for her in every stranger and at every street corner. The irony that the police sound just like them when they talk.

I didn’t like this chapter as much. The pages of “Category:” grew tiring and I skipped those pages. It would have been nice if it was just a couple of pages but it was at least 4 and then I started to feel like it took away from the book. I also liked the descriptions of the ball but then that dragged too and grew tiring.

The descriptions and narration of Teddy’s story was beautiful, taking the reader back into the past. The lying stranger and the last time he saw Sherry. His love and admiration for her and his regret at not calling after her loud enough. How he lied to reassure the Mothers while he has to live with the grief and pain of not knowing what happened to her.

The complexities of family and community through the character of Teddy and Sherry were quite interesting and realistic.

I liked the freedom in the description of them running around free as youth after a ball. The descriptions of danger and how they’ve had to face it or have become vulnerable to it are moving and unfortunately very real.

I really like how the narrator doesn’t sound like one singular person, but rather a united set of voices from the 5 Mothers as they discuss their experiences and struggles.

“Odd. I can’t find a Pluto. I look up at him his eyes are different. Dead. Quiet. Oh, there’s one.”
I got so confused by the line and then kept reading and like why is there just so good? You genuinely never see what’s coming with this book I love it.

Did not see that twist. Also what concerns me is another betrayal upcoming: is Mustang going to betray Darrow or is he referring to the Ceres slave girl or even Antonia since we haven’t heard from her in a while? I also like how you forget just like everyone else about the houses. It’s Darrow’s followers; not the house of Mars. There is no house of anyone anymore.

Darrow and his team are so so smart. I thought after Sevro drank the wine and left, they would find his dead body later on but I could not have been more wrong. This was so cool.

Darrow is really learning how to lead the right way. It’s nice to see that he still remains true to his identity as a Red; not being overcome by being surrounded by privileged Golds. It’s nice to see his fight, his passion, his ambition and how he sees everyone as human despite their ranks. He doesn’t hold complete hate but knows his enemy.

I also don’t like this romance sub plot which has been added in. I don’t know if it’s because I’d prefer if Darrow was alone or if I don’t like how Mustang is essentially piggybacking off Eo in Darrow’s mind. It makes her feel like a replacement of Eo rather than one echoed quote (“live for more”) which could have suggested parallels or at most, a foil. Also, I don’t think it was introduced well.

So the Proctors have been sold out and bribed for a rigged victory: “ the ArchGovernor has secretly threatened and bribed and cajoled all 12 of us till we came to agree upon the fact that his son should win. But we have to be careful in our cheating. The drafters, my real bosses, watch every move from their palaces, ships, et cetera. They are very important people as well.”

Okay so I don’t like how this guy writes women. I’ve noticed it since the early stages of the book but it wasn’t anything bad so I just thought it maybe I was just imagining it. But I don’t like how their beauty is always mentioned and this scene especially with Mustang is so uncomfy. Like I get they’re all beautiful Golds but why call the guys ugly but focus on how beautiful/feeble/helpless the girls are?

It is days before I’m able to walk. I wonder where those nifty medBots are now. Tending someone the Proctors like, no doubt. I won Primus and they never gave it to me. Now I know why the Jackal will win. They are getting rid of his competition.

There is still privilege even in the highest of classes and ranks. The Jackal was born advantageous.

Things looked really good for Darrow - he became a good leader. However, things now look bad for him. I love the flow of the story and how it continuously keeps you hooked; I need to know more. Still, it’s not overwhelming at all. I can’t wait to see how the first book will end. I also can’t wait to see what the author will do with his Red/Gold identities - his friendships add some conflict to those too.

Seeing how everything plays through is so fascinating and attention-grabbing. The fast-pace, the chaos, the strategy. I knew there would be other reds as a plot twist but I was still shocked nonetheless when I found out. And the suspense when introducing new threats/characters? This book is so so good.

The Greek mythology aspect to this book I didn’t expect but it is definitely well written and has really grasped my attention further. The book moves at a really good pace and seeing how Darrow acts as a Gold but also becomes a Gold is telling.

“Darrow was kind in Lykos.”
This made me smile; such a cool moment.
