Things went terribly wrong right at this point.

Ok so Tolkien actually describes this story in a letter we read to his publisher but the synopsis doesn't convey just how long the in-universe time is -- and I'm not even halfway through 🤯

How was that just 7 pages ❤️‍🩹

The toughest chapter I ever read in any book. Not impossible or unreadable. Every paragraph references map locations that aren't even given in maps, names and relationships of family members that are mentioned once and never again or randomly, oddly phrased logic and clauses, and then the KJV style of speech. Then you situate each paragrapg into the entirety of what you know about the time and space and history.

Beautiful story so far. Even this early on a lot of things make so much more sense now.

Referred to many other pages to find a picture in each paragraph of the illustrations intro but it was very helpful even though it was a slog. First part tells of creation of the timed world and the work put in to making it and the reason for imperfection. Mainstream versions of Tolkien's work leave these steps out necessarily because they don't want to deal with religion / don't have rights to the Silmarillion. A+

Spent 2 hours reading and haven't even reached page 1 lmao I'm gonna hopefully finish the enormous front matter tomorrow. In one letter Tolkien explained so many connections and answered so many questions that I had. The story isn't as daunting as people make it out to be!
