I now have no doubt: Middlemarch is a bad book. It is dull in both senses: it is boring and tedious. It is boring because little of any event occurs of interest; it is tedious because Eliot's writing style is both obscure in great swathes, obliquely referencing, and circumlocutive, as if the exercise were to say the same thing in as many ways as variations upon a theme could possibly allow. Dull, boring and tedious.
