Oh, how sad. It's Christmas, his wife has just left him with his dogs and taken the boy with her. Next thing we know, one dog is dead and the other had a broken leg. They were hit by a reckless driver. This book has got to pick up from here.

Not sure what he finds quirky about a bowl of black olives. it always went over big in my family, no matter what the age. Most of this seems to be what a dark ages we lived in, food-wise, in the '50s.
