Dungeon level 1 cleared with help from a few friends - Princess Donut is finally getting the love she deserves.

This just feels like a nice MMORPG I would have dug into if it didn't mention permadeath.

My dude Carl gets pulled over into a dungeon world along with his cat Princess Donut. With his whole world upside-down, he needs to start preparing for a Hunger Games equivalent dungeon crawl.

It's a video game story in the form of a book, there are literally menu items and HUDs mentioned throughout the book. For my RPG-coded brain, this is video game maxing.

The book makes me feel curiosity and anger toward a few while making me get attached to the main character without fully understanding his intentions.
The happenings tend to evoke emotions from relatable events while keeping the prose simple.

Stoner's relationship with his wife feels horrifying, and makes me wonder if that's how people survived in the 1920s
The book has started to take a rather sour turn, but still well written and engaging

not about drugs...
Ch 1 - Fast-paced and well-written. The scene where Stoner realizes he's in love with what he's studying at the uni felt surreal and was heartfelt.
Ch 2 - Masters is an interesting character. The overlooking environment of WWI and how the characters react to it is on point.

The book is captivating till now

There is so much world-building, and there always seem to be more questions to be answered. The characters are fun, the pop-culture references hit well, and the jokes are quite hilarious.

Though I am just getting started with the book, the writing is fun, but I have second thoughts about Will Wheaton narrating.

Aight, we get to focus on Tony's twin, Toni, a much more grey character who doesn't mind messing around, which comes off well with her bond with Chow.

Sidra is such an interesting character, mechanical and yet so humane at the same time. Tak's changing gender throughout the chapters and the pronoun use is fascinating.
While I miss the Wayfarer crew - the character development for Sidra, Pepper and the world around them is perfect.
Love how it seems to turn into a tiny heist by the end of the book.

The books is so much more focused on character building this time now that most of the alien culture is built up. The focus and intersections on Pepper's past and Sidra come together well.

Picked this up in 2021 when I visited Seattle. What was meant to be my pilgrimage to go see all the grunge places, also reintroduced me to Riot Grrl.

Picking up right at the end of the first book and focused on Lovey! Already loving it :)
