This book is great

Oh it’s modern day too! Multiple stories intertwined. Love it.

I’ve only just started this book, and so far it’s a touch melancholy, but the accents are delicious (listening to the audio, obviously). Somehow I thought this took place in modern day from the description and was surprised to find it’s historical fiction. What fun!

Probably would have finished this tonight, except for my miniature night owl wanting me to read it aloud to her.

The princess may have died, but don’t worry! Colin is still here to be the absolute worst.

Okay, the sections on her sons being so sick and dying has been painful. The sections on her son with the traumatic brain injury were hard, because I kept playing it against what I know and have experienced with Rob.

That being said, this has been the only time I’ve felt she’s done justice to portraying Princess M. In a better light, doing what she can for the AIDS epidemic. I do admire her in this space.

The abysmal parenting continues. And damn, they really do live in a whole different world.

We’re reaching an age where the books Sophie gets as gifts are interesting enough that I’m going to read them AND I’m going to take credit for doing so.

That being said, this is mostly very simple, but choc full of scientific names instead of common names, so I’m a bit baffled as to the target age group.

Okay, so the actual chapter (singular) on being a lady in waiting was very short and made it sound like it’s really just a personal assistant job, with like… a fancy title ‘cuz you’re assistant to the [insert royalty here].

Husband is still an ass.

Now we’re flaunting our wealth on our fancy island with fancy parties, mourning the shitty husband’s spending habits.

Chapter 10: Lady in Waiting.

It’s about damn time.

Okay, we’re halfway through and there’s still no lady in waiting action.


There is, however, a shit ton of Colin being the literal worst, topped with some really spectacularly awful parenting.

Chapter “Absolutely Enraged.”

I am uncomfortable.

Ut oh. Seems like we’re building towards an unhappy marriage.

So far, this has been pretty much exclusively backstory on Anne, and while I’m sure that’s not what the people who actually know things about England and court were looking for, I am quite enjoying it. It feel like it will help me answer the burning (basic bitch) questions like:

“Wait, ladies in waiting are still a thing?”

“Why would anyone in today’s age want to be one?”

“What do they do?”

This just doesn’t hit like the last one.

Honestly, the book before this one wasn’t my favorite of the MurderBot series, and I’m not super thrilled to be out here on the planet with the kind of aliens and alien robots and corporations doing corporate things, but it’s MurderBot, so I’m here for it.

Murderbot, how I love thee.

I might strangle mother “marmie” for her shaming of Meg raising twins on her own and failing to pay enough attention to her husband who… leaves.

Good God, Jo. You are such a bitch (going about with Amy to visit people, playing the fool).

Okay, Laurie was more likable with the babies, and Demi is a cute nickname.

Still powering through. Still not loving it, but we had a fantastic discussion on it in book club yesterday.

Pressing on. Still surprised by how much lack of love I’m feeling towards this book!

This has been strangely slow going for me. I’m listening to the audible full cast, and find some of the voices a little grating, as well as the story hard to follow occasionally without traditional narration, but I’m hoping it picks up.

The slog continues because I don't know how to accept sunk costs.
