"The Europeans used ink to draw lines on maps: they were lines that did not exist in reality and created some of the most artificial borders the word has seen. An attempt is now being made to redraw them in blood."

We experience moments of deprivation of the self when we wake up from sleep, coma, fainting, etc.

Mind and consciousness are suspended in these situations due to observations about our own condition and how it relates to others' behaviour, and due to the reports of people who experienced these.

Epileptic automatism and akinetic mutism provide the best study case for alterations of consciousness and behaviour.

Nuclear consciousness is related to adequate behavior, within a specific context. Behaviour is the result of simultaneous "melodies" that may be either persistent or brief and the resulting behaviour is more than the mere sum of its parts. The behavioural "score"e is constituted by verbal report, actions, emotions, directed attention, elementary attention, background emotions and wakefulness.
