“…on the ground that my games delayed my progress in studying subjects which would enable me to play a less creditable game later in life. Was the master who beat me himself very different from me? If he were worsted by a colleague in some petty argument, he would be convulsed with anger and envy, much more so than I was when a playmate beat me at a game of ball…And yet I sinned, O Lord my God”

“My heart has ears ready to listen to you, Lord. Open them wide and whisper in my heart, I am here to save you. I shall hear your voice and make haste to clasp you to myself. Do not hide your face away from me, for I would gladly meet my death to see it, since not to see it would be death indeed.”

“Sin comes to us,like Judas, with a kiss; and like Joab, with an outstretched hand and flattering words. The forbidden fruit seemed good and desirable to Eve, yet it cast her out of Eden. The walking idly on his palace roof seemed harmless enough to David, yet it ended in adultery and murder. Sin rarely seems sin at its first beginnings. Let us then watch and pray, lest we fall into temptation” (Ryle 17).

As someone who used to hold to the foreknowledge or prescient view of election(the idea that God chose people He knew would choose Him) (I held it in defiance of reformed doctrine when I couldn’t deny predestination) and thought it fit nicely and made sense, but then just realized it wasn’t Biblical, Chapter 6 was helpful as this view makes no sense at all once followed through.

Chapter 4 provided one of the best explanations of the fall of Adam and my own responsibility for original sin, and consequently my own fall. I had not considered the full implications of the Federal view of the Fall, that Adam being the perfect representation of all mankind means that just as he fell, so did I and everyone else. I see this as exceedingly better than billions of falls, since we all would.
