Carved in Sand: When Attention Fails and Memory Fades in Midlife
After having brain damage, recovering, and then, noticing that I'm not as sharp as I was on short-term memory, although long-term seems much clearer and cohesive since recovery, this is a trip. So interesting, so realistic, so true to life.
To those who criticize have no empathy, or no experience in this realm: Wait. It's coming. If you're lucky enough to last that long. lol

Parole officers, British style. What could go wrong in a John Mortimer way? lol Fun ensues.

Don't Worry, Be Grumpy: Inspiring Stories for Making the Most of Each Moment
A great book to keep in the car while you wait for Mom to finish shopping. Some good conversation starters in there.

Stoics and Epicureans (World of Philosophy)
The first half is about the Epicureans, whose philosophy I misunderstood, thanks to all the negative press given to them from the Stoics, forward. I have found a new appreciation of the practice that seeks to provide pleasure, meaning the basics of food, shelter, companionship, and kindness, for all, as opposed to what I've been led to believe since I left college. This is fascinating reading. Liberals, heads up!

Don't Worry, Be Grumpy: Inspiring Stories for Making the Most of Each Moment
#83, Bureaucrat Bullies, reminds me of "Don't Get Mad, Get Even" that I read, and bought many years gago. Same wisdom, different religion.

Stuff Christians Like
This is funny? No. Booty-God-booty is not hilarious, although the author and his fans seem to think so.
What is hilarious is the one about honeymoon sex being as good as the second coming of Christ. Pathetically funny.
He talks too fast, and about stupid stuff. I feel sorry for those who find this funny. Sad.

Witches, Midwives, and Nurses: A History of Women Healers
Once again, I'm forced to face how men insist on controlling women, particularly their bodies. This should be required reading in high school. For all students, and teachers.

The Forgetting Machine: Memory, Perception, and the "Jennifer Aniston Neuron"
Yowza, this is interesting. The math is a little annoying, because I'm listening to the audio, and it's a little hard to figure in my head, but the information on how the brain processed light into perceived images is amazing. Having spent nearly a year legally blind recently, this is just the stuff for me. Yippee!

Riding the Elephant: A Memoir of Altercations, Humiliations, Hallucinations, and Observations
I laughed, I cried, and then, I fell asleep. The book finished just as I was waking up. I'm actually listening this time. He really is funny. I loved Ch. 8, about the panto. Not mime, like the French. lol I've been to panto. It isn't the same in Seattle.

Grand Central Winter: Stories from the Street
I loved the story about the tv show about the homeless situation. Geraldo Rivera always was a self-agrndizing jerk, and here's proof. Just another indication of how tv can be used for good or for not-so-nice. The days of Merv Griffin and Dick Cavett are gone forever, replaced with the like of Jerry Springer and his ilk. That's when I stopped watching tv. I didn't like hate poured into my eyes and ears.

Grand Central Winter: Stories from the Street
I keep thinking that this was 20 years ago, and it's only gotten worse and worse, with the opioids. This is terrible. Heartwrenching. Has the media overworked our compassion? Flamed our uncertainty, stopped our outrage?

Enchanted Night
How is this author not more well known?
I've been in love with him ever since "The Barnum Museum." I actually didn't finish that book because my library didn't have anything else by him at the time.
Stefan Radnicki is amazing as narrator. Deep, mysterious voice, great background sound effects. Listen in the dark of the night.

Language A to Z
What a delightful idea! Language through the alphabet. Double negatives for D, Q is for the origin of quiz. So entertaining. As soon as my mind wanders, I pause and come back. It's too much to listen to straight through. Like essays and short stories, they're best to sample.

Packing My Library: An Elegy and Ten Digressions
This is just like a visit with a friend while sharing how we really feel about our books, why, and how we deal with it.
Digression 5 alone is worth the price of the book for its discussion of the Library at Alexandria. Delicious. The 7th, with the thoughts on the uses of dreams, language, and dictionaries is another favorite.

How to Listen to and Understand Opera
If I don't like opera at the end of this course, I can't imagine that it could ever happen.
But, as usual, Robert Greenberg is so fascinating, entertaining, and informative that I'm a third of the way through 32 lectures. True, I can't listen straight through, but no one can sit still that long. "A tenor isn't a man, it's a disease." Tons of interesting background, like the history of the castrata. (Ouch)

The Good Girl's Guide to Great Sex: (and You Thought Bad Girls Have All the Fun)
If I weren't so sorry for the women who read and believe this stuff, I'd be laughing my head off. How sad that someone who has only had sex inside of her marriage thinks that she knows all about sex, and goes around the world preaching about it. Ugh.
Save time, energy and frustration. Go read the original. "GGG to Bad Girl Sex." That will give you what you want to know. Realistically.
