After Anne’s dream of Lies, it is very interesting how she seemingly overnight grows from this typical teenage-years girl to a woman of sustenance, virtues and wisdom. The way she shows compassion towards those she once was fussing at, the way she is able to empathize with individual experiences she hasn’t experienced herself. & the way she is able to actively listen when Peter needed a friend. She grew up fast

Anne’s recount of her beloved Frank shows great maturity. The way Anne expresses love and how people are constantly yearning to not only be loved, but to be someone’s one and only, is just one of the many examples of how she was wise beyond her years. She perfectly encapsulates how young puppy love is and it is still remarkable to me how she can remain vulnerable during a time where vulnerability means weakness

November 26 1943 is such a wholesome entry. The way Anne’s heart aches for Lies and she is filled with regret for how she has treated her and the only wish of Anne’s is for Lies to know that she is praying for her well-being.

The way Anne describes her dynamic with her “Mum” and how she wants her Mum to be her Mumsie is interesting. Anne is just a girl longing to be understood

lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.

the history of men’s opposition to women’s emancipation is more interesting than perhaps the story of that emancipation itself.

as it was, what could bind, tame or civilise for human use that wild, generous, untutored intelligence?

she should have had a microscope put in her hand. she should have been taught to look at the stars and reason scientifically. her wits were turned with solitude and freedom.

i love how she describes the world around her, what really stood out to me was her take on why we cherish old works of art more than the new. this is because the antiquated brings a sense of familiarity while the modern does not. that’s why it feels like all the greats are gone, when instead new greats are being born.
