Maybe it’s just the mood I’m in but this feels cornier than the other Taylor Jenkins Reid books I’ve read… it’s also less fun when you don’t like the characters as much

Read this for the first time last year… forgot how charming the premise, the characters, and the prose is…

This is the most comprehensive and detailed source on ACT UP I have ever seen… this is truly amazing and I wish more social movements were written about like this! (By former members, using interviews and primary sources of those involved, talking about the political context and history of other movements that influenced the group, highlighting the accomplishments of women and POC in the group)

Reading this because I liked the author’s other book the cemetery boys and I like that there are more novels with trans characters 💕

Mentioning this random Bernie quote twice that goes “it’s not enough to say I’m a woman, vote for me”? Ah yes, every single criticism of Hillary Clinton was misogyny. It’s giving Margaret Thatcher utilized girl power 🙄

Okay I have thoughts…
I love getting statistics about women, but I wish analysis factoring in class and race was more central (otherwise we get moments like saying all women are workers because all women do care work? 🤨). Plus treating women like a monolith with the overemphasis on the sex based differences that apparently go to a “cellular level”? Plus citing sources like the UN, world bank, mckinsey, etc.

Still thinking about the claim that the United front against Japanese imperialism happened because the Soviets told the Chinese communists to do so… and then the betrayal of the nationalists was unexpected??? Lmao

For a book talking about anti communism, introducing the Soviet Union in such a basic and regurgitated way is so disappointing 🙄
