Reading this book reminds me frequently of Rocky Aur Rani, specifically how the way that Jaya’s character was treated reinforced the patriarchal norms of the family for generations. Trauma has various methods of expressing itself, sometimes in lashing out and other times falling in line.

There is an undercurrent of anger through these words. An understandable anger, and yet I wonder where this is leading.

Across various media that have adapted or translated Hindu Mythology (this, Amar Chitra Katha, versions of the Mahabharat) it has always been enlightening to remember that these Gods and Demigods are fallible. They make poor decisions. Obviously these are needed for the story, however it is also interesting because how can you call anything perfect when even Gods and Demigods fail?

It’s really interesting to notice all these family dynamics changing from the perspective of an eleven/twelve year old.

Pros of missing the book club meeting: you don’t feel bad you’re still reading the book
