Wow we are off to a horrible start. Initially temporality play seems to be a Walmart version of Márquez. Smith is extremely skilled at extended descriptions but that is the only compliment I can give thus far. The omniscient narrator is insufferable—they point out everyone’s worst qualities. Smith employs strange stereotypes but doesn’t even say anything meaningful about them. I do hope it gets better

I feel so bad for Ursula honestly. I think as the matriarch she tries to keep everyone together and cared for even as she herself is suffering from her “solitude of decrepitude.” I think her old age upsets me more than anyone else because her entire life has been her trying to protect her family and keep them safe and happy and yet she’s forced to reconcile that perhaps they’re destined to suffer

met the first woman I don’t like in this book 💔💔 tragedy. it’s getting less sad but I know it’s going to get worse also idk why they keep naming their kids after family members who suffer so much like helloooooo what is going on here. I really love the way Gabriel Garcia writes though he never says anything directly which seems frustrating but it’s extremely captivating
