Inferno, Canto XII complete.

“The Phoenix & Turtle” was the last official non-sonnet poem in this novel. It’s short, dense, but interesting. Made even better by the fact it is so unlike everything else of his that I’ve read.

“In my / stars I am above thee, but be not afraid of greatness. / Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and / some have greatness thrust upon ’em.”

For how often I hear this used to motivate people in real life, it’s hilarious this comes from a letter used to prank someone.

“FOOL: Good madonna, why mourn’st thou?

OLIVIA: Good Fool, for my brother’s death.

FOOL: I think his soul is in hell, madonna.

OLIVIA: I know his soul is in heaven, Fool.

FOOL: The more fool, madonna, to mourn for your / brother’s soul, being in heaven. Take away the fool, / gentlemen.”

Sonnets CXXVII - CXXXIII.

Sonnet CXXX is the famous one out of this bunch, but it felt like awkward, cringe poetry that one friend we all had wrote when we were teenagers. That’s how several of this week’s batch read to me.

“Feast on my destruction, Saturnian Juno, / Feast! Look down from above on my affliction, / Cruel goddess, and glut your savage heart!”

At least someone had the courage to say it. Juno is the literal worst.

Inferno, Canto V complete.

It’s weird seeing Achilles here and not in a lower circle for wrath (you know, for the whole stopping up a river with bodies of slain Trojans), but apparently Homer wasn’t available in Dante’s time. That’s too bad. He really missed out.
