Angie Powers is on page 60 of 248 of More than a Glitch: Confronting Race, Gender, and Ability Bias in Tech
The author claims that technology in law enforcement doesn't actually reduce crime. Her use of statistics really shocked me. In explaining how the Oakland police department scanned license plate numbers to identify stolen cars, she clarified that "[o]nly .1% of license plates scanned match[ed] [those of] stolen cars" (Broussard 60). This is crazy since the police had to spend extra money to store all of this data!

In re-reading section 1, I looked up the term "technochauvinist." While Broussard provides a def, the term is used often so I wanted to ensure I got it. When I researched the term, I discovered Broussard coined the word in 2018 in her first AI book. In that book, she described technochauvinists as people who think "tech is always the solution" (Cobbe). This tracks b/c she asks the reader to question why we use tech.

This book is so good that I would write an in-depth academic analysis comparing it to Water Dancer just for fun.
