Set this down for too long what was I thinking

"I sat there thinking how to answer and he waited for me to speak and for a few seconds neither of us said anything. I wish I could be with you, I told him before I said goodbye. Me too, said that voice like a bird from another dimension. A few days later his mother called and told me that he had died."

I'm moving slowly through this because of all the things I have going on. I keep forgetting how brilliant it is.

"I thought: if we find a hotel, if we're in a dark room, if we have all the time in the world, if I undress them and they undress me, everything will be all right, my father's madness, the lost car, the sadness and energy I felt and that at moments seemed about to choke me. But I didn't say a word."

Reading this feels more like the book watching me read it because it's more in control than I am.

"I turned around and through the back window I saw a shadow in the middle of the street. All the sadness of the world was concentrated in that shadow, framed by the rectangle of the Impala's window."

Section one was one hell of an intro for this story. Bolaño isn't messing around.

"Part 3: The Poet Masturbates"

"She was pretty in a perfect, absolute way. In front of girls like her, I found myself acting as though they didn't actually exist. It was rude of me, but I don't think I could really help it."

This is taking some serious work to get through. I just want to be done with it...
