Great book so far. It gives reasons to reevaluate what digital technologies we use and a plan to follow to change your habits successfully. He does this in part 1 and elaborates on new ways to use technologies in part 2. Since I finished part one I’m going to do the declutter and finish the book at the end of the month like Newport suggests.

Update: Can't believe it's taking me so long to read this, but I have been very busy (masters degree and move overseas). It's long enough that I've gone through my "read a lot" and "read nothing" periods several times each. With about 200 pages left, I'm trying to finish it before I begin teaching. I will likely continue reading some nonfiction after this though. Novels don't appeal to me now. Not sure why :/

Book 2 takes on a slightly different tone than the first. We're in a new setting as well. It does not have the powerful start of the first book, but I'm sure there's more to come.

I was reading Madame Bovary but I've given up. It's so boring.

This anthology, on the other hand, is not boring at all. It's awesome! It's a little too self-conscious of comics' perceived legitimacy as "real" "art" for my tastes, but it is from 2004 and greatly precedes the "graphic novel" boom we've seen in recent years. I should keep myself aware of the work this did to establish comics in the literary world.

Halfway through this and I'm surprised by how genuinely disturbing these stories are regardless of their subject matter. I may just stay up and finish it tonight.

This needs a new cover that doesn't make it look like a magic book you'd get in the back of a head shop.

I'm having a good time reading this and seeing the similarities and differences between the book and the movie, but today, reading this is just making me crave more Knausgaard

I haven't been reading too much lately but I'm getting back on track. I'm finishing up The Shining this week and will get to Light in August next. After that I think I'll be ready to return to Knausgaard. I've been craving it lately and reading his new introduction to A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man reminded me how much I learn from him. Link to the intro ->http://nyti.ms/1sazyWX

So far this book has been good albeit it a bit didactic in the ways Schell repeats many of his opinions. It's too emotionally involved for my taste in this kind of text. However, these are just the downsides that come with the book's great accessibility. He knows how to explain these concepts to people who don't know much about game design (me).

Giving up on this one for now because it's due back at the library for the second time. Some portions of it were completely enthralling and beautiful. It's the modern autobiography, it's a man's prayer to God about his entire life, it deserves the praise it gets. However, it's still pretty boring in between those spellbinding passages. Maybe in a couple years I'll feel the need to return to this.

Reading this for a game design class this semester. I'm skimming a lot, but a lot of it is skimable and spends pages teasing out definitions that will be obvious for many readers. Seems like a good introduction to the field so far, though.

Pretty great so far. Some excerpts are too short to feel much from them but overall the choices have been really interesting and I love the design of it all.

As usual, I've found something fantastic to spend my time on right as finals are breathing down my neck. So far this collection seems really promising based on Ivan B.'s great introduction. I've looked at some of the reviews on GR and as of now I think they're misguided and that this book will be greater than most of them think, but I haven't read enough to say yet.
