He’s trapped in his egoism. The ending reinforced the underground man’s profound psychological imprisonment. Every anecdote we see the paradox of freedom and self sabotage. His final rejection of Liza is the ultimate demonstration of his philosophy. Fyodor argues throughout this character that human beings are fundamentally irrational and will sabotage their own happiness just to prove they have free will

Got to the second part of the book. He’s still very self conscious, vulnerable and polemical telling anecdotes. Starts with the officer he (weirdly obsessed with) hates pretty much. He was 24 at that time and still depicts his depression and patheticness? A lot of shifts with illusions and reality. Basically highlights how he came to be the Underground Man and how society can shape and form the ideals of a person.

he’s ranting the whole time about utopian ideas as well as rational egoism (he does have a lot of good points tho)

So far, Avdotya Romanovna broke up with Pyotr Petrovich. He had the audacity to describe her in such a weird way. He is obsessed with himself, thought he could own Dunya just because of town rumors and because she is poor. Now, he wants to fix everything and get her back tf!? Rodya left to be alone for sometime (or forever?) ( for obvious reasons reasons :p)

Rodya committed the crime, and it didnt go as he planned. He feels extremely guilty bc what provoked him to do the crime in the first place was “the cause for the better good”. The anxiety he’s feeling is unbearable. After it happened, his health was noticeably getting worse and worse. Porfiry made his first appearance, and it already started bad. Rodya keeps raising suspicion because of how paranoid he’s.
